Governor Bredesen's Energy Bill Needs Help!

The Tennessee Clean Energy Future Act, an initiative of the Bredesen administration and Energy Task Force, needs our help. See a briefing on HB2318 below. Please contact your House members and others who may be appropriate and urge them to vote for the bill without weakening amendments. Many of the amendments ask for counties to opt out of the statewide adoption of the International Residential Code (IRC). A statewide code will not only improve energy efficiency, but also sets the minimum level for the Health and Safety of Tennessee homes.

The bill has passed the Senate comfortably but has run into trouble in the House.
Voting on the amendments began Tuesday, June 9 so please contact your representatives by phone or email as soon as possible. Find your legislator here: http://www.capitol.tn.gov/legislators/

ERV’s are the most economical HVAC equipment you can buy and they operate almost for free!
Greenheck is a major supplier of HVAC equipment and a developer of Energy Recovery Ventilation equipment with units ranging from 200 to 20,000 cfm and heat recovery efficiencies up to 83%.
Close the doors please! You told your kids to not to air condition the outside, but code mandates that you blow outside air straight into the building to meet the indoor air quality requirements. What’s the difference? Raw outside air, at 15, 20 or 25 cubit feet of air per minute per person can be the single largest HVAC load in the system. Energy Recovery Ventilation lets you precondition the hot incoming air by moving most of its heat and moisture into the cool, dry air that must be exhausted, significantly reducing the load on the building. Come see how.

Solar Window film - Block the heat but not the light

The view may be beautiful, but the sun heats up the building and fades the furniture. Modern window films are available that can be virtually invisible and yet block a good percentage of the solar radiation and damaging UV radiation coming in the window. We’ll review the materials, the installation requirements and the performance data.

High Efficiency Lighting – Brighten your world for less energy!
Presented by Sam Delay of TVA – Chattanooga, TN
TVA spends significant resources in evaluating and promoting the efficient use of energy. Mr. Delay has followed the development of high efficiency lighting and will share insights into the products currently on the market as well as what is on the horizon.
In many buildings, the lights can be the one of the two highest loads in the structure (outside air is the other!) Yet lighting options abound and the selection is getting bigger every day. Choose your fixture, the color of the light you need and the proper control options and you can increase the system performance while decreasing the cost of operation and the electrical and cooling loads.

Chattanooga's First LEED certified Building

Well, folks, it's official- Chattanooga has it's very first LEED certified building! River Street Architecture's new office at 714 Cherry Street in Downtown Chattanooga. We're proud of RSA for leading the way in Sustainable Architecture- from practicing what they preach.

The building, owned by Fidelity Trust and remodeled by GenTech Construction boasts of LEED Gold certification! At 1:30pm on May 01, 2009 there was an awards ceremony to commemorate the occasion.

A job well done, River Street Architects!

Individuals and businesses throughout the world will turn off their lights for one hour to draw attention to global climate change and our reliance on non-renewable resources. This small act will hardly be a drop in the energy use bucket but it will help draw widespread attention to these two problems that threaten the prosperity of future generations.

Volkswagen and 8 other major automobile manufactures believe it’s the former and are out on a mission to prove it! On August 11th, hydrogen vehicles from 9 automobile manufactures left Portland, Maine on a carbon-free mission to reach the west coast. Along the way they will stop in 31 cities to promote hydrogen’s role in the Nation’s transportation future. On Monday, August 18th the tour stops in Chattanooga. Join members of the Chattanooga Green Committee, the Center for Transportation & Environment, fellow city residents and hydrogen fuel experts as we try to de-mystify transportation’s “hydrogen future.”

Conference Focus:
This conference is largely funded by a grant award from the U.S. EPA Office of Water. The joint proposal, submitted by the Kentucky Dept. for Environmental Protection and the Tennessee Dept. of Environment & Conservation, was titled "Green Building: Fostering Water Quality and Efficiency in the Southeast."

This conference is the key work product of the grant. The two agencies hope to connect with representatives of local government who manage and implement land use planning, building codes, plumbing codes, and storm water programs, as well as others involved in those areas.

The primary goals for this conference will be to:
1) Inform city/county officials of the benefits of green development and the codes/regulations that can be implemented to encourage green development in their communities; and
2) Promote dialogue and exchange among developers, architects, contractors, and state and local officials on the aspects of green development and its contribution to the efficient use and quality of our waters.

The Downtown Council of the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome Jeff Cannon of RiverCity Company and creator of the forward thinking Green/Spaces. This meeting will take place at The Read House, on Thursday, October 4th at 7:30am.

Jeff will introduce Chattanooga to this new grant program funding green sustainable buildings and will also will be talking about buildings’ impact on the power grid, he will share some easy do-it-yourself tips for any business looking to trim the bottom line, and will also explain how the fund will benefit Chattanooga. Jeff most recently served as Project Coordinator for RiverCity focusing on Main Street.

Tremco's John Rutter will talk about "Green Vegetative Roofing"

This course will review the roofing approach known as vegetative roofing. We will explore the benefits, costs and limitations of this sustainable roofing technology as it applies to the end user, the designer and the society at large. A review of the various approaches will be presented, including extensive, semi-intensive and intensive options. The various system components of typical vegetative design will be explored including roof system options, root barriers, retention and drainage components, soils and planting options. City To Participate In Green Asphalt Demonstration

The city of Chattanooga, along with Astec Industries, Inc., Talley Construction, and Southeastern Materials will be participating in a joint demonstration project using “Green Asphalt” to pave a section of North Terrace Road between McBrien and Germantown roads. “Green Asphalt” involves a process developed by local Chattanooga industry, Astec Industries, Inc. This new process involves reclaiming or recycling up to 50% of the existing asphalt pavement and mixing it with new materials at a lower temperature than previously achievable in the industry. This results in reduced green house gas emissions.According to Astec Industries Chairman and CEO Dr. Don Brock, “this process involves mixing asphalt at lower temperatures than those currently being used. This warm-mix asphalt eliminates the smoke and smell experienced with existing methods. This asphalt mix is equal to or better than the mixes now being used and can save 11% of fuel costs over existing production methods.”“We are recycling existing pavement and this new production method reduces green house gas emissions. This is an innovative technology and one very much welcomed in Chattanooga – especially with our focus on air quality,” said Mayor Ron Littlefield.Officials from the National Center for Asphalt Technology and The National Asphalt Pavement Association will be on hand for the demonstration. This new pavement will have a national and international influence on the asphalt paving industry. Astec Industries, Inc. is a manufacturer of specialized equipment for building and restoring the world’s infrastructure. The company was founded in Chattanooga in 1972 and currently has 3,500 employees. Astec’s manufacturing operations are divided into four business segments: aggregate processing and mining equipment; asphalt production equipment; mobile asphalt paving equipment; and underground boring, directional drilling and trenching equipment.

"Green" building protocol adopted by Metro [Nashville]

Tuesday night Metro government buildings will be built to be "green" from now on.
The Metro Council gave final approval tonight to legislation requiring the city to construct its buildings to meet design standards that protect the environment and reduce energy use. The law would apply to buildings and additions that cost more than $2 million or have at least 5,000 gross square feet of occupied space, beginning with projects for which planning starts after July 31.

Those buildings would have to meet a design protocol called Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Commonly referred to as "LEED," the standards were developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.
